12 New Toyota Models Chosen as IIHS Top Safety Picks

No matter how you slice it, safety should be, and often is, the number one concern drivers consider when they're in the market for a new auto. And, while it's true a vehicle is only as safe as the person who's driving it, there are certain mechanisms that automakers can put into place to help make the vehicles they offer as safe as possible.

Enter our favorite brand, Toyota. In case you didn't know, a great deal of new Toyota models are considered to be Top Safety Picks as determined by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). In fact, 12 models have recently landed on the list for the 2013 year ? 12, that's quite an accomplishment.

The vehicles recognized performed well in seven out of 12 categories the IIHS provided. Out of all the large-scale manufacturers on the list, Toyota placed the most vehicles.

Curious to know which vehicles earned the designation? Here they are, in no particular order:

  • the Toyota Yaris
  • the Toyota Corolla
  • the Toyota Prius
  • the Toyota Prius c
  • the Toyota Prius v
  • the Toyota Camry
  • the Toyota Avalon
  • the Toyota 4Runner
  • the Toyota Highlander
  • the Toyota Venza
  • the Toyota Sienna
  • the Toyota Tundra

And, we at Toyota of Wallingford can say, without a doubt, that all of the above models are worth checking out, as well as the others in the new Toyota lineup. To do just that, we encourage you to stop by our conveniently located dealership at 859 North Colony Rd. Wallingford, CT 06492, any time.

Toyota Considers Hybrid Variant for RAV4 Lineup

Quite recently, the brand-new, redesigned 2014 Toyota RAV4 was introduced to eager auto fans at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The new model featured exciting revamps and since its debut has attracted many a fan praising the auto for its innovation and modern style. But, it also left a few wondering what Toyota has in store next for the RAV4 in terms of variants.

One very intriguing speculation has piqued our interest, and that's that Toyota may be planning to create a hybrid version of its flagship CUV.

And, honestly, this makes perfect sense to us considering the sheer number of people we have coming into Toyota of Wallingford and asking about Toyota hybrids like the Prius and Camry Hybrid. It also makes sense, because a hybrid RAV4 would truly be the best of both worlds: the utility of an SUV and the efficiency of a hybrid all in one sleek, reliable, perfect package.

So, will the new model come to fruition? It remains to be seen. Toyota experts have expressed the need to evaluate market trends and the concurrent necessity for such an auto before sending it to the production lines. As Yoshikazu Saeki, Deputy Chief Engineer at Toyota explains, "We are watching the market ... after introducing the new RAV4 we will see. There will be a possibility of introducing a hybrid RAV4 and we will respond to what the market wants."1

One thing is for sure however, we at Toyota of Wallingford are excited at the prospect.

How about you?

If you want more information about the Toyota RAV4 or any of the other new Toyota models we carry, feel free to stop by 859 North Colony Rd. Wallingford, CT 06492, any time.

Clint Bowyer Customizes Toyota Prius for SEMA Show

The Prius in and of itself is a tremendously innovative auto. But, for the 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, the Prius will be even more revolutionary.

As auto enthusiasts likely know, the annual SEMA show is a chance for automakers to present their latest vehicle creations with aftermarket flair. And for this year's, Toyota has hired on famous NASCAR and NHRA drivers to customize a few select new Toyota models including the Camry, Tundra and aforementioned Prius for the Toyota Dream Build Challenge.

For the "Tekked-Out Prius," Toyota has employed Clint Bowyer and RKM Performance company to give it some exceptional technological flair. For instance, the one-of-a-kind Toyota hybrid model will present with a 17-inch, Windows 7 equipped, 17-inch custom touch-screen computer, two ASUS 12-inch tablets in the back seats, 45 feet of fiber optic lighting, a 16-speaker JBL audio system and a side-view camera system in lieu of regular side mirrors.

And in addition to just the technological upgrades, RKM Performance has also clad the "Tekked-Out Prius" in smooth leather and suede upholstery, German carpeting and contrasting electric blue stitching.

And did we mention, that the winner of the Toyota Racing Dream contest will receive 50,000-dollars to bestow upon his/her favorite charity? So for that, Toyota of Wallingford would like to wish Clint Bowyer and his "Tekked-Out Prius" the best of luck.

Toyota Plans to Add to Hybrid Lineup In Near Future

It likely comes as no surprise that Toyota is known for its stellar hybrid lineup. After all, the Japanese automaker is the genius behind the Toyota Prius and all of its variants. And now, Toyota of Wallingford is pleased to announce that Toyota has intentions to expand its hybrid lineup even more over the next three years.

How much more?

Well, quite a bit, as Toyota is promising the addition of 21 new hybrid models to its new Toyota lineup over the course of three years. If you do the math, this equals out to seven models per year.

And new hybrids aren't all Toyota has up its sleeve to boost its green initiative, as the innovative automaker is planning to introduce one new all-electric fuel-cell vehicle, as well.

In terms of specific details surrounding Toyota's new green vehicles, they are limited at this time. We do know that the iQ EV, from Toyota's counterpart, Scion is slated to arrive around December, and the all-new Toyota RAV4 EV has officially arrived at U.S. dealerships as of September, and is boasting some pretty impressive specs.

However, in the grand scheme of things, three years is really not far away, and we're sure to receive consistent updates along the way. And as a dedicated enthusiast, Toyota of Wallingford promises to post any news we catch wind of right here on our blog, to which we encourage you to subscribe. And in the meantime, if you're in the market for a new or gently used car model, we invite you to visit us at 859 North Colony Rd. Wallingford, CT 06492 where we carry a wide variety of both.

Toyota Prius: Now, the 3rd Most Popular Car in the World

How did a little Toyota hybrid manage to become the third best-selling vehicle in the world? Some attribute the rise of social media as it allows satisfied customers to spread positive word-of-mouth praise like never before. Others say its rising gas prices, which are forcing people to seriously reconsider their driving habits and methods of transport.

There are many theories as to how the 2012 Toyota Prius has managed achieve such incredible sales, but we here at Toyota Of Wallingford know the truth.

So what is it already?

The power of choice. Toyota is giving hybrid drivers more options by expanding the Prius lineup from being some simple model to be an entire lineup of fuel-efficient, eco-friendly vehicles to choose from. Big on space? The 2012 Toyota Prius v has you more than covered. Need something more maneuverable? The 2012 Toyota Prius c can fit just about anywhere. Especially conscious of your carbon footprint? The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In can go even further than your average hybrid on even less gasoline.

The Toyota Prius may be the best-selling hybrid in America. But, it isn't exactly known for its aggressive performance. However, that's about to change.

While they'll continue to offer Prius drivers the peace of mind that comes with superb mileage and low emissions, Toyota is adding an available PLUS Performance package (featuring components from the  new PLUS hybrid performance line) to the 2011 model. Toyota explains, "PLUS is an evolution of hybrid design, where fuel-efficiency co-exists with aggressive styling and performance handling."1

The part  of Toyota's apt explanation Toyota of Wallingford would like to highlight is "co-exist". This indicates the package embodies both Toyota core values: Eco and Advanced Technology. So, while the PLUS Performance package makes the Prius faster and more exciting to drive, it remains true to its eco-friendly heritage, continuing to offer industry-leading fuel efficiency...a win, win, if you ask us.

Production shutdowns in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th has not slowed down the popularity of Toyota Prius, available at Toyota of Wallingford.

The third milestone in the last six months Prius, worldwide sales topped the two million mark in October 2010, and Toyota's award-winning hybrid beat Japan's all-time domestic sales record for any vehicle with sales of 315,669 units.

On a global scale Prius sales remain consistently strong at more than 2,100,000, of which European sales account for more than 200,000 units. And total Toyota hybrid vehicle sales now exceed three million units worldwide.

First introduced in Japan in 1997, and on sale in Europe and US for more than a decade, Prius has the highest brand awareness of any hybrid vehicle. Three generations of Prius have not only seen significant improvements to successive evolutions of its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, but also a marked change in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology.

Toyota will not only continue to produce the Prius gas electric hybrid, but by the beginning of next year, Toyota will introduce a Prius plug-in hybrid to the mass market.

Starting in 2012, Toyota hopes to have a full line-up of Prius vehicles, making it a stand alone brand connected to Toyota.

A dealer and automaker can tout their brand all they want, but when a trusted-third party recognizes the value of a car manufacturer or their models, people always take more notice. That might be why so many prospective car buyers are increasingly turning their attention toward the Toyota RAV4, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota Prius. Consumer Reports magazine recently awarded each of these cars with the following titles of distinction:

-    RAV4 (Recreational Active Vehicle four-wheel drive) - "Best Value Small SUV"
-    Prius hybrid - "Top Green Car" (for the eighth consecutive year)
-    Sienna minivan - "Best Family Hauler"

In addition, Consumer Reports indicates that Toyota leads all other automakers with 20 recommended vehicles out of 26 tested. This serves not only to bolster the automaker's present prestige but confirms previous awards the company has earned, enhancing their overall rapport for excellence.

"These latest accolades join the impressive list of awards and recognitions received in recent weeks, giving Toyota an exceptionally strong start to 2011," says Adel Ezzet. "The fact that Toyota is totally dominating the awards season shows the high esteem in which the brand is held by auto industry experts and analysts, which in turn reflects the confidence and trust of consumers throughout the world." Ezzet also attributes the outstanding success of the RAV4, in particular, to the fact that it "combines the benefits of a fuel efficient car with the comfort and spacious interior of a SUV, offering the perfect blend between power, fuel economy, quality, and safety"2

Toyota Prius With 62 MPG Target

Toyota now says its Prius can do 62 mpg.

Jim Colon, Toyota vice president for product communication, made this announcement last week:  "Whatever goal [the Obama administration] establishes, Toyota will be prepared to meet. If it's 62 miles a gallon, we'll be able to achieve that." Mr. Colon added the new rules "excite" Toyota, and the company is "already going in that direction."

According to Auto News: "Martha Voss, another Toyota spokeswoman, said which a carmaker was not endorsing a 62 mpg aim, adding which Toyota considers it too early to pinpoint the figure until studies suggest more information as well as other factors have been considered."

Toyota is a the beginning of a long battle - almost every other auto maker either already has or is coming out with a hybrid version of one of their cars. One Korean auto maker has stated all of their vehicles will reach 5o miles per gallon minimum by 2025 - hybrid or not.

But Toyota is going at it alone - members of the auto lobbying group, the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers, attacked House of Reps leadership on the feasibility of meeting a 62 mpg target - they feel it is unfair to the American auto industry.

With Toyota, anything (even a 62 mile per gallon exclamation) is possible.

Toyota is still holding strong in the consumer market, and execs at the Japanese auto maker are pledging that their Prius branded vehicles will be the best selling cars in America by 2020.

Toyota is working on a line of vehicles that will hold the Prius name, including an MPV and possibly a crossover or coupe. There is also a Plug-in Prius coming later this year. Prius is, without a doubt,  the best-selling hybrid vehicle in America and around the world. Bob Carter, Toyota America's VP of Sales, told Auto News that the Prius nameplate "will be the #1 selling vehicle in the US by the end of the decade." With only 9 years to go, that's a lot to ask for. We think Toyota can pull it off.

Toyota's Prius also has to compete with a slew of hybrid cars and plug-ins from other auto makers, both foreign and domestic, and ranging from affordable to insanely expensive and luxurious. The amount of electric cars and hybrids from major automakers (not to mention start-ups) hitting the road in the next few years doesn't make Toyota's claim any easier to fulfill.

Prius posted its best-ever December in 2010, moving over 15,000 units last month and over 140,000 total units for 2010, or 8% of Toyota's total US sales. That's a 0.9% increase over 2009.

Despite overall Toyota sales being down slightly, and the Camry and Corolla still managed to take the 3rd and 5th best-selling vehicle positions for 2010, Prius is still sitting pretty with the majority of hybrid car shoppers.

Test drive an all new Toyota Prius and add to the legacy today at Toyota of Wallingford.
