Over the past few months the topic of the next-generation Toyota Yaris, which debuted in Japan early this year, has filtered into a deafening silence. Don't worry! It's still in the works.

See, the problem isn't with the Yaris itself. It's simply that Toyota has been so busy playing catch up after the record-breaking earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that they've had their priorities focused elsewhere... specifically with resuming normal production levels.

Happily, Toyota is getting their feet back under them, eyeing the return to normal operations in the near future. And, feeling less like they're running on a treadmill, they've once again resumed talk of the new Toyota Yaris.

According to Don Esmond, Senior VP Auto Operations, Toyota the next-generation Toyota Yaris will hit dealerships (i.e., Toyota of Wallingford) by the end of 2011. Toyota's ultimate plan for the new Yaris is, of course, to put it on level playing ground with the most popular subcompacts available... a very savvy move, considering U.S. consumers are more frequently opting for smaller more eco-friendly, fuel-efficient cars.

Toyota has released few specs surrounding the forthcoming Yaris at this time. But, we expect more details soon and promise you'll be among the first we tell as soon as we learn more.

We can tell you that the next-generation Toyota Yaris will likely be based on the same platform, and hold the same engine, as its predecessor. Areas targeted for change are the subcompact's aesthetics (interior and exterior) and technological comfort and convenience features.

There is the slight possibility that Toyota might introduce a hybrid-electric variant of the Yaris as well. That's the plan for Japanese markets at least, where the Yaris is known as the Vitz. But, don't hold your breath. No Yaris electric-hybrid variant has been confirmed for the states yet. But, we're certainly keeping our fingers crossed.

Stay tuned for more details surrounding the next-generation Toyota Yaris, coming soon. To learn more about the 2011 Toyota Yaris currently available at Toyota of Wallingford in Wallingford, CT. We're happy to share specs, compare models, and arrange test drives.

People were starting to get a little worried over Toyota's four-month silence, following the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. Happily, the Japanese automaker is approaching the return to full production levels, and they've started talking "new" again... a sure sign that things are looking up.

What do we mean by "talking 'new'"? "New" both in regards to models and technologies...When an automaker is launching a lot of newness, and keeping discussions of innovation active, it's a good sign that their bound for sustained success.

The newness Toyota has in store for us is comprised of a diverse array of offerings aimed at satisfying all different driver's needs and preferences. This fall, they're planning to release the Prius V minivan, next-generation Camry and Camry Hybrid...and Scion iQ. Scion, for those of you not familiar with the brand, is Toyota's youthful, edgier arm).

Later, towards the end of the year, Toyota will launch the next-generation Toyota Yaris. You may have previously read about this. And, looking ahead to next year, they'll introduce two additional Prii models, the C and Plug-In, RAV4 EV, and other to-be-announced models and technologies.

The forthcoming new models, we'd like to focus on right now, however, are the next-generation Toyota Camry and Toyota Camry Hybrid. Again, we expect them to hit Toyota of Wallingford's showroom this fall.  While few details surrounding the Camry models have been released and/or confirmed at this time, we do know the two refreshed models promise drivers leading-edge technology features, a modern design, enhanced performance, cushier ride and more refined handling.

Stay tuned to learn more about the new Toyota Camry, new Toyota Camry Hybrid, and other imminent Toyota models. Toyota of Wallingford is here to keep you informed.  In the mean time, you can always visit our 2011 Toyota Camry inventory online, or in person at

Toyota Prius v Details

We knew Toyota was designing the jovial-looking Prius v for active families aiming to reduce their dependency on gasoline and make their hectic lives more convenient. What we didn't know were the specifics. Until now...

As the name suggests, the new 2012 Toyota Prius v seats five people. However, "v" also connotes the friendly family hauler's versatility. Thanks to a 60/40 split rear bench and fold-flat front passenger seat, the latest Prius offers four different seat configurations, perfect for accommodating your varying needs.

Plus, behind the rear hatch door lies approximately 34 cubic feet of storage space! According to Bob Carter, Group Vice President and General Manager, the Prius v has "more cargo space than 80% of small SUVs."1 This makes it perfect for toting anything from groceries to coolers to sporting equipment.

In recognizing families can be as messy as they are fun, Toyota took special care to help owners keep it looking like new for many years to come. The hybrid's synthetic SofTex upholstery, for example, offers the convenience of stain resistance and the fashionable look and feel of rich leather.

2012 Toyota Prius Safety and Convenience Features

-    Push-button start
-    Seven standard airbags

Remember back to 2008 when Toyota promised to display a CNG-electric hybrid Camry at the Las Angeles Auto Show? Irv Miller, Vice President Toyota Motor Sales' U.S. division said, "With this concept, we are confirming our interest in pursuing CNG [natural gas]."1

Despite Miller's strong proclamation of intent, it's hard to recall much news about Toyota's pursuit of CNG, since 2008. Perhaps the topic has been pushed out of the media's sight and minds by the company's poster child, the Prius. It certainly doesn't mean that Toyota shelved their plans.

Recent reports indicate that Toyota Motor Corp.'s North American engineering and manufacturing operations has made a deal with Constellation Energy, employing the firm to manage its natural gas needs. This proves the automaker is continuing to pursue CNG with more intensity than ever.

Among the many areas Constellation Energy is expected to handle for Toyota are natural gas supply, risk management, hedging, budget analysis, energy market monitoring. The Baltimore-based company will also be responsible for monitoring relevant regulatory and legislative issues for the Japanese automaker. More specifically, they're expected to provide risk management services to 14 Toyota facilities, and supply natural gas to nine different Toyota sites throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Toyota Prices Rise After Quake

Toyota announced that the Japanese auto maker will have to raises prices on all but five of its models for the remainder of its 2011 sales year. But do not be alarmed, the increases are small - between 0.4 to 2.2 percent.

According to spokesperson Greg Thome, "The price change is simply a mid-model year price adjustment and has no relation to any production shut downs or shortages stemming from the recent disaster in Japan. The five models not affected by the new prices are the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Yaris sedan, Lexus CT200h and LFA, and the Scion xB."

Overall average price increase is only 1.7 percent. The largest MSRP jump comes from the 2011 Toyota Sequoia, which goes up $900. $41,905 is the new asking price for the SR5 V8 variant, and $42,530 for the Limited V8 - prices including the $975 destination fee.

The new prices will begin showing up on window stickers at dealerships like Toyota of Wallingford during May of this year. Vehicles produced in North America starting May 1 (including the Toyota Avalon, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Matrix), will wear the new numbers. Vehicles produced in other parts of the world will see the updated prices for all cars arriving in the US later this May.

The plural of Toyota Prius has sparked debate starting with the launch of the first vehicle, nearly 10 years ago. However, when Toyota decided to grow its Prius range, the dilemma became more urgent. To resolve the issue, Toyota invited the general public to vote online for a plural reference. While Priuses, Prium, and Prien were among the terms included in the 1.8 million votes, Prii took the majority.

Speaking on the open online vote, Colin Morisaki, Advertising Manager, Toyota said, "Community has always been a big part of the Prius brand, so it was only fitting we invite the online communities to participate in the plural discussion. The people have spoken - Prii will be the accepted term used to describe multiple Prius vehicles going forward."1 Making the decision even more final, Dictionary.com has updated their entry of Prius with Prii online.

Among the Prii joining the original Toyota Prius, are: the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (PHV), Prius v and Prius c concept. The Japanese automaker hopes to further grow adoption of the Pius brand by expanding their selection of vehicles that maintain the lineups' core values: impressive fuel economy, low emissions, proven gas-electric technology, and environmental stewardship.

Toyota Prius With 62 MPG Target

Toyota now says its Prius can do 62 mpg.

Jim Colon, Toyota vice president for product communication, made this announcement last week:  "Whatever goal [the Obama administration] establishes, Toyota will be prepared to meet. If it's 62 miles a gallon, we'll be able to achieve that." Mr. Colon added the new rules "excite" Toyota, and the company is "already going in that direction."

According to Auto News: "Martha Voss, another Toyota spokeswoman, said which a carmaker was not endorsing a 62 mpg aim, adding which Toyota considers it too early to pinpoint the figure until studies suggest more information as well as other factors have been considered."

Toyota is a the beginning of a long battle - almost every other auto maker either already has or is coming out with a hybrid version of one of their cars. One Korean auto maker has stated all of their vehicles will reach 5o miles per gallon minimum by 2025 - hybrid or not.

But Toyota is going at it alone - members of the auto lobbying group, the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers, attacked House of Reps leadership on the feasibility of meeting a 62 mpg target - they feel it is unfair to the American auto industry.

With Toyota, anything (even a 62 mile per gallon exclamation) is possible.

It seems like automakers and consumers alike are on the elusive quest for a better way to power electric cars. Well, that quest is getting a little less equivocal. Toyota Motor Co., the largest seller of hybrid vehicles worldwide is working on developing a magnesium battery that holds twice the energy of lithium-ion cells. And, according to Jeffrey Makarewiez, the engineer managing the U.S. project, the work in Ann Arbor complements other future electric-power chemistries at Toyota labs in Japan.

"Going from nickel-metal hydride to lithium ion, you essentially double energy capacity," Makareweiz says. "Lithium ion theoretically, under ideal conditions, has a capacity of about 2,000 kilowatt hours. That's still not enough to really make a very competitive battery that's necessary for future plug-in, electric and hybrid-electric vehicles."1

Toyota has and continues to release rechargeable models with lithium-ion packs that let drivers go extended distances on battery power alone. However, Bob Carter, Vice President, Toyota City indicates that due to power-pack limitations, he expects much more modest demand of battery-powered cars in the next few years than does Nissan. Makareweiz estimates that vehicles with magnesium batteries or alternatives may be ready by 2020. He also indicates that while Toyota's Torrance, California unit is investigating aluminum and calcium as potential materials for car batteries, company engineers in Japan are researching "lithium air and metal air" batteries.
