The plural of Toyota Prius has sparked debate starting with the launch of the first vehicle, nearly 10 years ago. However, when Toyota decided to grow its Prius range, the dilemma became more urgent. To resolve the issue, Toyota invited the general public to vote online for a plural reference. While Priuses, Prium, and Prien were among the terms included in the 1.8 million votes, Prii took the majority.

Speaking on the open online vote, Colin Morisaki, Advertising Manager, Toyota said, "Community has always been a big part of the Prius brand, so it was only fitting we invite the online communities to participate in the plural discussion. The people have spoken - Prii will be the accepted term used to describe multiple Prius vehicles going forward."1 Making the decision even more final, Dictionary.com has updated their entry of Prius with Prii online.

Among the Prii joining the original Toyota Prius, are: the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (PHV), Prius v and Prius c concept. The Japanese automaker hopes to further grow adoption of the Pius brand by expanding their selection of vehicles that maintain the lineups' core values: impressive fuel economy, low emissions, proven gas-electric technology, and environmental stewardship.

Filed under: Hybrid, Wagon, Hatchback, Toyota 2012 Toyota Prius V - Click above for the high-res image gallery The Prius V is set to go on sale in the third quarter of this year, but the model being sold in the U.S. won't be the same as the European and Japanese versions. The New York Times reports that the hybrid wagon will come with only two rows of seating here in the U.S., while three rows will be offered overseas. Toyota spokesman John Hanson gives several reasons for this decision, but two stick out above all others. Perhaps most important is the fact that the U.S. version of the V will come only with a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack, which takes up a lot of room in the hybrid's hind-quarters to offer a sufficient third row. The Euro and JDM models will feature lithium tech, which is smaller and more compact. Another reason for the move is cost. Hanson points out that foregoing the third row and using the same battery tech as the current Prius helps keep cost down, which should make the fuel-sipping MPV more attainable to the masses. In Japan, the Prius V with lithium will reportedly be priced about $8,000 higher than the nickel-metal-hydride model. So will the lack of a third row be a big problem for the Prius V? We doubt it, especially as we would expect the third row to be very tight for America's typically larger builds. In the end, however, consumers could have the last word on the subject. If it turns out that green-conscious buyers do want that third row more than Toyota is expecting, Hanson claims that both versions could be made available at some point. Filed under: New York Auto Show, Coupe, Sedan, Lexus, Scion, Toyota, Rumormill Click either image for high-res image gallery We've gotten word from a very reliable source that Toyota is planning two big debuts at the New York Auto Show, although neither is wearing a ToMoCo badge. First up is a fully redesigned Lexus GS, something that we've reported on and spied before. Although it's unclear whether the GS we'll see in NYC is a concept or a production model, we do know that it will be underpinned by an all-new platform that will also be used on the next-generation IS, due out sometime next year. The current GS has been on the market since 2005 and, despite consistent sales, it's overdue for a refresh. Expect many of the same V6 and V8 powerplants to carry over, although we haven't gotten word on an F variant or whether the 450h hybrid will soldier on. More intriguingly is word that Scion will bring its own version of the FT-86 to the Big Apple's auto show, although don't expect a production version - this will be yet another concept similar to the version we saw at the Geneva Motor Show, just with new badges and a few stylistic tweaks. Expect more details to follow in the coming weeks. Toyota Prius With 62 MPG Target

Toyota now says its Prius can do 62 mpg.

Jim Colon, Toyota vice president for product communication, made this announcement last week:  "Whatever goal [the Obama administration] establishes, Toyota will be prepared to meet. If it's 62 miles a gallon, we'll be able to achieve that." Mr. Colon added the new rules "excite" Toyota, and the company is "already going in that direction."

According to Auto News: "Martha Voss, another Toyota spokeswoman, said which a carmaker was not endorsing a 62 mpg aim, adding which Toyota considers it too early to pinpoint the figure until studies suggest more information as well as other factors have been considered."

Toyota is a the beginning of a long battle - almost every other auto maker either already has or is coming out with a hybrid version of one of their cars. One Korean auto maker has stated all of their vehicles will reach 5o miles per gallon minimum by 2025 - hybrid or not.

But Toyota is going at it alone - members of the auto lobbying group, the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers, attacked House of Reps leadership on the feasibility of meeting a 62 mpg target - they feel it is unfair to the American auto industry.

With Toyota, anything (even a 62 mile per gallon exclamation) is possible.

Experience Prius today at Toyota of Wallingford.
