Toyota Prius Pickup Concept

Back in 2007, a Toyota hybrid pickup truck concept was revealed at the Detroit Motor Show. It was surrounded in mystery before this unveiling, and even more so after.

The concept slipped into obscurity while the Japanese auto maker attempted to build up its already highly successful Prius nameplate.

Now that the company is thinking of branding off Prius into its own sub-brand (the sedan, and sportier coupe and other models) their supposed Prius pickup is back in the spotlight.

Toyota called it A-BAT Concept and by the time it came to the 2007 North American International Auto Show & Detroit Motor Show, many expected the model to go into production. However, three years later, Toyota has yet to confirm any production intent for the A-BAT.

The Toyota A-BAT could see life as both a Toyota and a Scion. "The Toyota version will be based on the Prius and the Japanese automaker will target it more as a 'parcel carrier' than a cargo hauling pickup" - according to Automotive News.

If the A-BAT is produced, Toyota's biggest obstacle will be building the pickup in the United States due to the "chicken tax" on imported trucks. This concept will not be a replacement for other Toyota Pickups like Tundra or Tacoma, but an addition to the supposed Prius brand.

Toyota Creates More US Jobs With New Plant

The Southern Indiana region is about to see an expansion at one of their larger auto facilities, making way for more US-based jobs. The New Albany assembly line is hoping to produce 30 more jobs for the area. It's not much, but in this economy every bit helps.

The plant will create and supply parts for the upcoming Toyota Camry model, and all 30 position will be filled before a 2013 deadline.

TG Missouri, who owns the plant that manufactures consoles, dashboard equipment, painted trim parts and other safety components, will invest more than $3 million to upgrade machinery at its existing facility.

"This investment could have gone to a number of facilities in neighboring states, but once again Indiana is coming out as the top choice due to our business-friendly environment and skilled work force," Indiana Commerce Secretary Mitch Roob said in a statement.

TG Missouri currently employs about 90 workers and plans to hire additional manufacturing and supervisory staff for 2011.

Indiana's Economic Development Corp. offered TG Missouri up to $200,000 in performance-based income tax credits for these job creation plans. John VanCleve, vice president of TG Missouri New Albany, said city, state and development officials "went to great lengths to deliver the right solutions for our needs as an expanding company."

"We are thrilled to continue operating right here in Southern Indiana," VanCleve said in a statement.
